Fascia is made from collagen and its properties are pretty inelastic.  We are born with the ability to form collagen wherever the body requires extra assistance with movements or positions performed on a regular basis.  Evidence shows that a baby is not born with an ITB on its lateral sides of the legs or the Thoracolumbar Fascia over the lumbar area of the back, however these areas (and others depending on the requirements asked of the body) tend to develop throughout a lifetime to provide support and in turn the build up of fascia in many people causes restrictions in movement, and therefore pain.  This is where the bodywork technique I use of Myofascial Release effectively softens and unwinds fascia build up and in many cases has much a longer lasting effect than using just massage treatment on its own.
